A landmark of modern anime, the series earned strong commercial success and industry recognition, with nominations and placements at awards such as the Newtype and Seiyu Awards. Synopsis
In the near future, a fully immersive VRMMORPG lets users control their in-game bodies through a helmet-like device called the Nerve Gear. Suddenly, players find they cannot exit the game: the developer has sealed them inside and declared that freedom only comes by clearing the tower and defeating the final boss on the 100th floor. Worse, any character death now means death for the person in the real world. Trapped between virtual dangers and real-world stakes, the players must band together and fight to survive.
