Synopsis
In Estaque, a northern suburb of Marseille wedged between the smoke of oil refinery stacks and the open Mediterranean, a small, stubborn group has taken shelter in a worn cabaret. José, the club’s owner, is a big‑hearted Romani man with a passion for cars and women; his wife Joséfa, despite her age, still performs as the venue’s stripper. Marie‑Sol climbs the hill each day to pray at Notre‑Dame de la Garde, imploring the Virgin for a child. Her husband Patrick has been unemployed for years but remains kind-hearted beneath a rough exterior, and their friend Jaco is crumbling under financial pressure, resented by his wife and daughters for failing to meet the mortgage. Finally there is Papa Carlossa, who lives in the past, convinced Franco still rules Spain and secretly fantasizing about assassinating him.
