Synopsis
In 1863, Mississippi farmer Newt Knight, serving as a Confederate battlefield medic but morally opposed to slavery, prefers caring for the wounded over fighting. After his nephew falls in battle, he returns home to Jones County to protect his family, only to be branded a deserter and hunted. Forced into the bayous, he finds shelter with a community of escaped enslaved people, and—joining forces with them and other dissenting local farmers—he leads a ragged insurgency that upends the existing order and alters the course of their region’s history.
