Synopsis

Roger Grant, a classically trained violinist, shocks his family and mentor by trading concertos for a jazz ensemble that soon finds unexpected success. As the band rises, Roger becomes enamored with their magnetic singer, Stella, but his fear of losing her drives him to sabotage her bid for a solo career. The outbreak of World War I in 1917 scatters their lives: Stella marries Roger’s closest friend while he is away at the front. When Roger comes home, a decisive concert at Carnegie Hall forces the three of them to face the tangled mix of love, loyalty and regret that binds them.
