Synopsis
Léopold, a valet in the household of prosecutor Maître de Royssac, devotes his spare hours to studying the penal code and, while on leave, is unexpectedly appointed to sit as a judge in an intermediate court—his verdicts treated as final. He falls for Agnès, who is engaged to the outwardly respectable Dr. Ventoux, a man who secretly transforms into the gangster known as "Le Chat." When Le Chat plots the heist of the century, Léopold agrees to help—on the condition that he be allowed to court Agnès—but Le Chat refuses to honor the bargain.
