Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1983 film Nostalgia is a slow, meditative pilgrimage through memory and exile — a Russian poet wandering the fogbound villas and ruined churches of Italy, haunted by longing and a mystic’s promise of spiritual redemption. Shot in Tarkovsky’s austere, long-take style, the film unspools questions of belonging, language and the ache of homeland with imagery that feels like a prayer or a dream. Synopsis
A Russian poet, Andrei Gorchakov, travels through Italy with his interpreter Eugenia to investigate the life of an eighteenth-century Russian composer who once lived abroad. Cut off from his native land and consumed by an unshakable homesickness, Andrei becomes fascinated with Domenico, a fervent mystic obsessed with spiritual salvation. Through spare visual composition and a slow, contemplative rhythm, the story explores exile, the persistence of memory, and the aching inability to belong fully to either place or language.
