Synopsis
An ambitious Austrian climber, Heinrich Harrer, leaves his family in 1939 to lead an expedition into the Himalayas. With the outbreak of World War II he is captured by Allied forces and held as a prisoner of war, but he and a fellow detainee manage a daring escape. Their long, perilous trek eventually brings them to Lhasa, Tibet, where Harrer encounters the 14-year-old Dalai Lama; the young leader's compassion and teachings gradually erode Harrer's arrogance and transform his outlook on life.
