Synopsis
Denied a promotion at the university where she teaches, Dr. Lily Penleric, an accomplished musicologist, impulsively travels to visit her sister’s struggling school in rural Appalachia. There she uncovers a hidden archive of Scots-Irish ballads—ancient songs preserved through generations by the region’s isolation. Determined to use this material to bolster her academic case, Lily pushes deeper into remote hollows and mountaintop settlements to document the music. As she gathers recordings and stories, the work begins to transform her, and the songs’ pull grows ever stronger.
