Synopsis

Raised under the stern authority of her governess, Mademoiselle, Sophie de Réan grows from a headstrong child into a spirited young woman. After her mother's death she is placed in the care of her aunt, Madame de Fleurville, who nonetheless keeps Mademoiselle on to guide Sophie's education. As she blossoms, Sophie falls in love with her cousin Paul — once the perfect, obedient boy — but Mademoiselle refuses to accept their match and pushes her instead toward Armand, the proud son of Prefect Hugon. When Paul surprises everyone by taking up the republican cause against Louis-Napoléon's coup and is defeated and forced into exile, Sophie must choose between yielding to the social order imposed on her or rebelling once more to follow the man she loves.
