Synopsis
Antonius Block, a weary Swedish knight returning from the Crusades, finds his homeland devastated by the plague. Convinced that God has forsaken the world, he dares to challenge Death itself to a game of chess for his life. As he wanders a country gripped by fear and grief, he crosses paths with a traveling troupe led by Jof and his wife Mia, and becomes consumed with the hope of evading Death long enough to perform a single redeeming act.
