On Stream Tracker, we check where to find films that shaped a genre — and The Smashing Machine is exactly that kind of raw, uncompromising fight story. This 2002 documentary drags you into the cage with Mark Kerr between 1999 and 2001: the training, the takedowns, the corner conversations, the bruises and knockouts, and above all the private battle with painkillers and addiction behind the public victories. It’s not a highlight reel but a ringside seat to a champion falling apart, captured in gritty, often heartbreaking detail. In this article we’ll tell you whether The Smashing Machine is currently available to stream on Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or AppleTV+ and how to watch it if it’s on any of those services.
Synopsis
Between 1999 and 2001, this unvarnished portrait follows Mark Kerr — a bright, articulate, and emotionally open athlete who many regarded as the most dominant fighter in the world. A former Olympic wrestler turned professional, Kerr steamrolled opponents early in his career, earning the fearsome nickname "The Smashing Machine." Yet the lure of big money and the high of his victories could not shield him from mounting injuries and inner turmoil; the brutal toll of combat begins to erode both his body and psyche. As pain mounts, Kerr turns to powerful prescription drugs, and the camera documents his descent with stark intimacy — from pleading with friends and handlers for medication to injecting painkillers — culminating in a devastating loss to Fujita in Japan that underscores a narrative as painful as it is heartbreaking.
