Synopsis

When civil war conscription pulls every able-bodied man from a secluded mountain village in Latin America, the remaining women are forced to sustain their community alone. Under the pragmatic guidance of Rosalba, they abandon long-prescribed domestic roles and, almost by accident, create a self-sufficient, women-led society that flourishes on cooperation and new social rules. Months later the men come back—some accompanied by an American reporter drawn to the story—determined to reassert their former authority.
