Three years after leaving the Brøynes institution, Elling has set up his own life, while his old roommate Kjell Bjarne has moved upstairs to live with Reidun and her little daughter, Mojo. Increasingly on the sidelines, Elling withdraws into solitude, studying people around him with a mix of awe and incomprehension as he wonders how everyone else seems to manage so effortlessly. When Kjell finally steps in, Elling resists at first but is gradually reshaped—neat, rested and properly groomed—emerging with a new sense of self. Still, a hollow spot remains, and one evening he meets a woman he believes can fill that gap. Determined to win her confidence and affection, he tries everything he can, but a dinner at her home exposes unexpected reservations and sends his plans in an unforeseen direction.
