At Stream Tracker, we’re taking a look at Asylum (1996) — a short, sharp British black comedy set in a mental asylum where stand-up riffs rub up against an overarching, slightly deranged storyline. Notable as the first onscreen collaboration of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson (who later made the cult sitcom Spaced), the six-episode series mixes ward-room sketches, oddball inmates and deadpan sketches, with David Devant & His Spirit Wife providing the title music "Ginger" and regular musical interludes. The show didn’t pick up any major awards, but its influence on British comedy is clear. Availability check: Asylum is not currently available on Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or Apple TV+ and has never had an official DVD release. Synopsis
Set in a psychiatric hospital, this British comedy was broadcast on the Paramount Comedy Channel in 1996 and ran for a single six-episode series. Eschewing a conventional sitcom format, it combined recurring darkly comic storylines with solo stand-up spots from an array of comedians. The show is notable for showcasing many performers who later became prominent in UK comedy and for bringing together Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson for the first time — a collaboration that would precede the cult hit Spaced. Several cast members kept their own names for their characters. The band David Devant & His Spirit Wife acted as the show’s resident musical act, featuring in every episode with material from their debut album Work, Lovelife, Miscellaneous; the opening theme used the track “Ginger.” Although the series has not been released on DVD, full episodes can be watched on Norman Lovett’s website.
