Synopsis

An American animated public-service special assembled a roster of well-known cartoon figures from weekday, Sunday-morning and Saturday-morning television to address drug prevention. Funded by McDonald’s and Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities, the program was simulcast nationwide on April 21, 1990 across the four major networks (ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS), many independent stations and several cable channels. McDonald’s also released a VHS edition through Buena Vista Home Video that opened with remarks from President George H. W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush. The special was produced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation in collaboration with Southern Star Productions, with animation outsourced to Wang Film Productions. Its original song “Wonderful Ways to Say No” was written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, the songwriting duo behind The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. The story follows Michael, a teenager who has begun using marijuana and pilfering his father’s beer, worrying his younger sister, Corey, as his behavior changes. When Corey’s piggy bank disappears, her cartoon tie-in toys magically come to life to help her track it down. They find the missing money in Michael’s room alongside his drug stash, and the assembled characters whisk him away on a fantastical journey designed to show the dangers and long-term consequences of substance use — a mission that aims both to help Michael and to avert a larger catastrophe.
