Dark Tourist

Synopsis

New Zealand filmmaker David Farrier sets off on a world tour of dark tourism, exploring destinations that commodify tragedy and the strange — from guided visits to Japan’s nuclear exclusion zones and Escobar-themed excursions in Colombia to the peculiar, state-orchestrated attractions of Turkmenistan. He meets the travelers drawn to these sites and the locals, guides and storytellers who keep their grim histories in circulation.
