Synopsis

Joana’s birthday turns into a nightmare when her abusive husband discovers she’s pregnant and tries to hurt her. She flees the city and seeks shelter aboard a boat crewed by criminals, but when she spots land she leaps into the water and swims to Terceira Island. Collapsed on the shoreline, she stumbles upon Chico, a bewildered child, amid a local religious celebration. Arriving at the ceremony with him, Joana is accidentally revered by the islanders as the living embodiment of Our Lady of the Sea.
