Synopsis

On an Earth transformed into a humanist utopia, Rudolf Sikorsky, head of the Commission for Contacts with Extraterrestrial Civilizations, tasks Maxim Kammerer with locating Lev Abalkin, a radical idealist who vanished after encountering a powerful alien culture known as the Wanderers. Abalkin had led an expedition to the planet Nadezhda, which was annihilated by a horrific experiment carried out by the Wanderers. After his contact, Abalkin murders his companion and returns to Earth with a plan to trigger the same kind of catastrophe that wiped out Nadezhda. Kammerer pursues him relentlessly, always struggling to close the gap as Abalkin stays one step ahead.
