Synopsis
Eleven-year-old Kenichi Mitsuba is an ordinary middle-schooler who struggles with his studies, is stubborn and lazy, and continually frustrates his parents and teacher with his love of shortcuts. His life changes when he befriends Hattori Kanzo, a young ninja of the Iga clan, who moves into the Mitsuba household and becomes a close part of the family alongside Kenichi’s younger brother Shinzo; Hattori is often accompanied by his loyal ninja dog, Shishimaru. Hattori watches over Kenichi and helps him face everyday troubles, but trouble also comes from Kemumaki, a rival ninja of the Koga clan, and Kemumaki’s crafty cat Kagechiyo—their rivalry frequently centers on the girl Yumeko. Kenichi repeatedly begs Hattori to get revenge, a recurring thread in many episodes, and Kemumaki’s schemes sometimes lead to misunderstandings that spark clashes between Kenichi and Hattori. Occasionally the trio receives backup from fellow ninjas Jippou, Togejirou and Tsubame.
