Synopsis

Airing in the United States from 1986 to 1987, the series grew out of a live-action pilot produced by Shelley Duvall that featured the characters as puppets and marionettes; the positive response to that special prompted a full animated adaptation produced by DIC Entertainment and LBS Communications in association with The Maltese Companies. Visually inspired by the toy line, the Popples are brightly colored, plush-like creatures with long, pompom-tipped tails and rear pouches that can be turned inside out, letting them curl up into round, fuzzy balls. Their name comes from the distinctive “pop” they make when unfolding or pulling things from those pouches, which in the cartoon often yield impossibly large objects as if from thin air — in one episode, a human friend peers into a pouch and finds a void filled with floating items. Nine Popples share a home with siblings Billy and Bonnie Wagner, who initially believe they’re the only children with secret Popple companions until a neighboring family moves in with its own varieties — including Rock Star Popples, Pufflings and Babies. Much of the show’s humor and conflict comes from the creatures’ well-meaning but chaotic interventions: they routinely interfere with everyday tasks (turning a simple toothbrushing or tidying-up into a disaster) and then scramble to set things right just in time. The central throughline follows Billy and Bonnie’s efforts to keep the Popples’ existence hidden from the adults around them.
