In this article we'll map out where you can watch The Agency today — checking Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV+ — and note which services, if any, offer full seasons, individual episodes, or physical/digital purchases.
Synopsis
The Agency was a CBS drama that dramatized the day-to-day operations and internal tensions of the CIA. Created and executive-produced by Michael Frost Beckner alongside Shaun Cassidy Productions and Radiant Productions, in association with Universal Network Television and CBS Productions, the series ran for two seasons from September 27, 2001 to May 17, 2003. Its production was notable for unprecedented on-location filming at the actual CIA headquarters. From the start the show courted controversy by confronting contemporary international events and the moral dilemmas of intelligence work. Beckner’s original pilot, written in March 2001, imagined a reconfigured agency confronting a burgeoning “War on Terror” after Al Qaeda—led by Osama bin Laden in the story—planned a devastating attack on the West. That pilot was scheduled to premiere at CIA headquarters on September 18, 2001 and to air on September 21, but the real-world attacks of September 11 led the network to delay its broadcast; the episode eventually appeared as the third installment of the first season. The timing of the series placed it at the center of a national debate about how television should treat urgent geopolitical themes. Producers adjusted the show in response to the shift in American attitudes after 9/11, but despite its topicality and access to authentic locations, CBS opted to cancel The Agency shortly after the conclusion of its second season.
