Monsanto Netflix legal drama : Jonathan Bailey and Laura Dern revealed

Two lawyers discussing case in empty courtroom

Jonathan Bailey stepping into a role originally meant for Glen Powell — that kind of last-minute casting shift tends to signal a project with a turbulent backstory. The Netflix legal drama Monsanto has had exactly that, navigating scheduling conflicts and cast changes before finally locking in a lineup that looks genuinely compelling. Here's everything we know as of April 2026.

A real courtroom battle turned Netflix original film

The story at the heart of Monsanto is not fiction. Dewayne "Lee" Johnson, a high school groundskeeper, sued the American agrochemical corporation Monsanto after claiming that prolonged exposure to its weed killer Roundup had caused his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The case became one of the most closely watched corporate liability trials in recent US history, and it is now the foundation for this upcoming Netflix original.

Director John Lee Hancock — best known for The Blind Side — co-wrote the screenplay alongside Ned Benson, Alexandra Duparc, and Michael Wisner. The official synopsis describes the film as follows : young attorney Brent Wisner takes on what seems like an unwinnable case against Monsanto on behalf of Johnson, while the company's chief toxicologist, Dr. Melinda Rogers, testifies that Roundup poses no health risk. It's a classic underdog legal drama, but grounded in documented facts rather than Hollywood invention.

Netflix reportedly acquired the rights to this project in a deal valued at $34 million — a figure that reflects both the commercial potential of the story and the platform's appetite for prestige legal content. Producers include Eric Kopeloff, Jon Levin, Adam McKay, and Kevin Messick through HyperObject Industries.

Jonathan Bailey, Anthony Mackie, Laura Dern : the confirmed cast

The three lead roles are now locked in, and the lineup is strong. Bailey takes on the role of Brent Wisner, the attorney whose courtroom strategy challenged one of the most powerful companies in the world. He replaced Glen Powell, who had originally been attached to the project before departing due to scheduling conflicts. Bailey is currently one of the most in-demand actors working today — Netflix subscribers know him well from his role as Anthony Bridgerton in Bridgerton, and his Emmy-winning performance in Fellow Travelers cemented his status as a serious dramatic actor. He also stars in Universal's two-part Wicked adaptation.

Anthony Mackie plays Dewayne Johnson. His track record with Netflix is extensive :

  • Io
  • Point Blank
  • Outside the Wire
  • The Woman in the Window
  • We Have a Ghost
  • The Electric State

Beyond the streaming world, Mackie is widely recognized as Sam Wilson — Falcon and eventually Captain America in the Marvel universe. He has spoken openly about his enthusiasm for this kind of story : "These days, stories about the 'little guy' taking on huge institutions seem few and far between. Erin Brockovich, Spotlight, 12 Angry Men… I legitimately think I can list 200 wildly successful films about real people standing up against overwhelming odds. So let's make Number 201." That's not promotional noise — it reads as genuine conviction in the project.

Laura Dern completes the trio as Dr. Melinda Rogers, the Monsanto toxicologist whose testimony shapes the trial. Dern is no stranger to Netflix prestige productions : she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story in 2020, and she's set to appear in Noah Baumbach's next Netflix feature, Jay Kelly. She has also spoken warmly about working again with Hancock : "There couldn't be a more vital story to be a part of."

Production status and what to expect next

After a prolonged development phase — partly caused by the scheduling issues that ultimately led to Powell's exit — filming is now officially moving forward. Shooting is set to begin in Bavaria, Germany, in mid-2026. The regional film fund FFF Bayern backed the international co-production with 500,000 euros (approximately $589,000), and the FFF Film Commission has been actively assisting the crew with location scouting in the region.

On the production side, the film brings together Munich-based KrautPack Entertainment as the German co-producer and Onda Entertainment as the American partner. Executive producers Philip Schulz-Deyle and Moritz Borman are overseeing the international side of the operation.

Academy Award-nominated cinematographer John Schwartzman (Seabiscuit, Jurassic World) has also joined the crew, which adds notable visual weight to the project. Netflix hasn't announced a release date yet. With filming beginning mid-2026 and post-production typically running six to twelve months for a project of this scale, a 2027 premiere on Netflix seems the most realistic window. We'll be tracking any official announcements closely and updating as soon as dates are confirmed.
