Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People is a wry, fast-moving portrait of Manchester’s music upheaval — Tony Wilson’s jump from local TV reporter to Factory Records instigator, the birth of The Hacienda, and the Sex Pistols moment that set everything in motion. Equal parts oral history and celebration of the punk/post‑punk explosion, the film earned critical praise and picked up several festival and industry awards and nominations. In this article we’ll see whether this cult chronicle is currently streaming on Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or Apple TV+, and how to track it down on each platform.
Synopsis
In 1976 Manchester, a frustrated local TV reporter named Tony Wilson longs for something that will set him apart. After attending a raw, electrifying gig by the Sex Pistols, he convinces his station to air the band’s performance—an act that ignites a burgeoning punk scene and draws local groups to him, hoping for guidance. Embracing the cultural upheaval, Wilson and his friends go on to establish Factory Records and open The Hacienda, becoming central figures in a musical revolution.
