Synopsis
During an 1839 voyage from Cuba to the United States, a group of kidnapped Africans aboard the Amistad, led by Cinque, seize control of the ship. Captured and held in Connecticut, they become the center of a fierce legal and political battle over their status—freedom or property. Theodore Joadson, a formerly enslaved activist determined to clear Cinque and the others, enlists the help of attorney Roger Baldwin to argue their case. The dispute eventually attracts the involvement of former president John Quincy Adams, turning the matter into a high-profile fight for justice.
