Fateless

Synopsis

Fourteen-year-old György Köves, the merchant’s son from Hungary, is swept into the machinery of World War II: first consigned to forced labor, then brought to Buchenwald. Left without his father, he finds work at a brickyard until the transport carrying him and other Jewish passengers is halted and they are sent to the camps. Inside, György confronts solidarity and tenderness alongside relentless cruelty, sickness and loss. Older inmates offer him hard-won lessons on maintaining dignity and self-respect amid dehumanization, even as he encounters the depths of hatred. If he survives and returns to Budapest, what will remain of him? Which instincts are natural, and what does it now mean to be Jewish? The film’s palette shifts between sepia, black-and-white and color to reflect its changing moods.
