Synopsis
Once a sharp young soldier, Mertsi returns from the Second World War with a lasting brain injury. In the late 1940s he drifts through the Finnish countryside, eking out a living with odd jobs and depending on the kindness of others. A workmate, Ville, keeps talking about his clever Spitz and the trouble caused by its overlong dewclaws. With help from his wartime companion Eetvi, Mertsi takes a job at a logging camp in the depths of a freezing winter; he works hard, but the gruelling labor overwhelms his tired body and fragile mind. Tormented by wartime nightmares, he spends his waking hours fixated on the dog, clinging to the hope that caring for it might bring him some small steadiness.
