Gracie!

Synopsis

By 1939 Gracie Fields, adored by the public as a beloved entertainer, is at the peak of her career even as she contends with cervical cancer and the nation's hopes for her recovery. When World War II erupts she refuses to stay on the sidelines, performing for servicemen despite her fragile health—a decision that worries her exacting husband, film director Monty Banks (born Mario Bianchi). After Italy enters the conflict Monty faces the threat of internment, so Gracie arranges for him to go to America while she undertakes a Canadian tour to raise funds for the war effort. Her travels spark accusations that she has abandoned the country that made her famous, and she is publicly jeered, only to later bring comfort and morale to soldiers by singing on battlefronts. With peace returning, she rebuilds her reputation and gives a triumphant performance of "Take Me To Your Heart Again" at the London Palladium. Monty’s death in 1950 leaves her grieving; though she remains a successful performer, she never quite reclaims the unassailable icon status she once held.
