Though not a mainstream prize-seeker, the film remains a key ethnographic document for anyone interested in Songhay ritual objects and the cinematic ethics of filming possession ceremonies.
Synopsis
A hampi ritual vase is installed at the Open-Air Museum of the Republic of Niger in Niamey amid a ceremony marked by possession dances. Filmmaker Jean Rouch extends his ethnographic cinema on Songhay ritual objects, showing that relocating a hampi into a museum setting can demand a formal ritual to secure the gods’ assent. At the time, however, recording a possession dance for the inauguration of a museum shrine raised ethical and curatorial doubts, and was regarded as problematic from a museological perspective.
