At Stream Tracker, here’s a quick look at L.I.E. (2001), Michael Cuesta’s unsettling coming‑of‑age drama set in the shadow of the Long Island Expressway. The film premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and received strong critical attention for its raw, morally ambiguous portrait of adolescence. L.I.E.

Synopsis

Howie, left emotionally adrift after his mother’s death and neglected by a father consumed by work in a New York suburb, spends his days with his friend Gary breaking into neighbors’ homes. Their petty criminality goes horribly wrong when they target Big John’s house — a macho ex‑Marine with a history of predatory behavior toward young people. After John makes an unsettling advance that Howie refuses, the three become entangled in a tense, dangerous and increasingly volatile relationship that drags them all into secrecy, violence and moral ruin.
