Love and Death on Long Island

Synopsis

Giles De’Ath, a cantankerous widower and once-celebrated author who detests the crude pleasures of contemporary mass entertainment, goes to the cinema intending to see a faithful adaptation of an E.M. Forster novel but, through a mix-up, finds himself watching a flashy teen sex comedy. On the screen he catches sight of Ronnie Bostock, a radiant young actress whose presence ignites a surge of bewilderment and attraction that forces Giles to confront long-buried questions about his own desires. Thrown off balance by the collision between his rigid worldview and the vibrant, confusing culture around him, he is driven into an uneasy self-examination about identity, longing, and his place in the late twentieth century.
