Synopsis
During the Nazi occupation of Paris in 1942, apolitical grocer Edmond Batignole lives with his wife and daughter in a tiny flat above his shop. His daughter's fiancé, Pierre-Jean Lamour—a collaborator with the occupying forces—tips off the authorities, leading to the arrest of the Jewish Bernstein family and the seizure of their apartment, which Edmond's household then occupies. A few days later, the Bernsteins' young son Simon escapes his captors and returns to the home he once knew. Moved by the frightened boy, Edmond takes him in and conceals him in the shop, hiding Simon from both Pierre-Jean and his own wife. When two of Simon’s cousins join him in the grocery’s cellar, the danger grows; once Pierre-Jean discovers the hidden children, Edmond resolves to shepherd them to safety across the Swiss border.
