The Flowers of Kirkuk

Synopsis

Najla, a newly graduated doctor from Rome, returns to Kirkuk when a heartbreaking letter from her lover, Sherko, orders her to forget him. Sherko secretly shelters wounded partisans, while Mokhtar, an officer in the dictator’s police, watches from within the regime—torn between duty and an obsessive love for Najla. Najla loves Sherko and becomes determined to use her medical skills to save him. Tracked by Mokhtar, Najla and Sherko are captured; Sherko endures savage torture and Najla is beaten, then offered a post as the police surgeon as a reward for betraying the resistance. She accepts, not out of loyalty to the regime but to gather names of the tortured and murdered and to smuggle that evidence to those who resist. In the hospital she witnesses systematic slaughter—women and children killed en masse—and begins to falsify reports to spare lives, sometimes declaring living children contagious with cholera so the killers will hesitate and the children can be hidden, even as those ruses put her at great personal risk. When Mokhtar realizes he cannot win Najla’s heart, he makes a final, redemptive choice: he helps Najla and Sherko escape the country by diverting border guards. His distraction costs him his life—he is shot while they flee—leaving Najla to carry the burden of what she has seen and done.
