Synopsis
A cantankerous retired physician, Isak Borg, travels from Stockholm to Lund with his pregnant, discontented daughter-in-law, Marianne, to accept an honorary degree from his former university. Along their journey they pick up a succession of hitchhikers whose stories and company prompt Isak to revisit memories, confront regrets, and reevaluate the joys and shortcomings of his life. Among them is the spirited young Sara, whose striking resemblance to the woman he once loved forces him to face feelings he thought long buried.
