Synopsis
On 23 August 1939 the world was stunned when Hitler and Stalin—long seen as irreconcilable foes—signed a pact that carved Poland between them and freed the Nazi leader to concentrate his forces westward against France and the United Kingdom. The agreement plunged Europe into war, yet the peculiar relationship between the two dictators was long neglected: their mutual fascination, the deliberate steps toward rapprochement, the signals of trust they exchanged and the strategic gains both drew from the German–Soviet accord. That fragile cooperation endured only until June 1941, when Hitler’s sudden invasion—Operation Barbarossa—rekindled a brutal, all‑consuming conflict.
