Synopsis
After striking a pact with the Jequitibá, José Inocêncio rises to legendary status as the region’s most prosperous cocoa planter. In his youth he wins the love of Maria Santa and their fierce romance produces four sons: José Augusto, José Bento, José Venâncio and the baby, João Pedro—who never knows his mother because she dies in childbirth. Grief turns to blame, and José Inocêncio holds João Pedro responsible for the loss of his great love, breeding a lifetime of coldness and bitter resentment between father and youngest son.
