Synopsis
Once dismissed as ragged outsiders, the painters who would become known as the Impressionists now draw millions to museums worldwide. The turning point came in 1874, when a group of artists hungry for creative freedom defied the official Salon and mounted their own independent exhibition. That bold act sparked a seismic shift in art — but how did this unlikely rebellion come about, and which restless personalities dared to paint in such unprecedented, provocative ways? Drawing on the Musée d’Orsay’s revelatory display, the film revisits that dramatic year through the voices of the time — the artists themselves, the critics who covered them and the Parisians who witnessed the dawn of Impressionism.
