Is the movie Me and the Cult Leader: A Modern Report on the Banality of Evil available on Netflix, Disney+, Prime or Apple TV+?

At Stream Tracker, we take a close look at films that keep stalking the collective memory — and Me and the Cult Leader: A Modern Report on the Banality of Evil (2021) is one of those. Filmmaker Atsushi Sakahara turns his own trauma from the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack into an uneasy road trip: he travels with Hiroshi Araki, an Aleph (formerly Aum Shinrikyo) executive, back to their university, hometowns and the sites that shaped them. Intimate conversations peel back motives, complicity and the slow, ordinary mechanics of violence — a living study of the banality of evil, confession, pilgrimage and the fragile possibility of redemption. If you’re wondering where to watch it, this article checks the film’s availability across major platforms — Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV+ — and explains regional differences in streaming rights. The film drew strong attention on the festival circuit; any awards or official recognitions it has received are noted below.

Me and the Cult Leader: A Modern Report on the Banality of Evil

Synopsis

Atsushi Sakahara, a survivor of the 1995 sarin attack on Tokyo’s subway, sets out on a trip with Hiroshi Araki, who serves as an executive of Aleph (the organization that evolved from Aum Shinrikyo). They revisit their childhood towns and the university they once attended together, and through long conversations a fragile intimacy develops. Gradually Araki reveals why he was drawn into Shoko Asahara’s movement and why he remains in a leadership position within the group despite not having been directly implicated in the attacks. The journey becomes ambiguous territory: the start of an unexpected friendship, an effort at reconciliation, or a confirmation that some lives must ultimately go in different directions.
