Meteor (1979) is a Cold War–era disaster epic in which a nearly 8‑km fragment of the asteroid Orpheus, set loose by a comet, hurtles toward Earth. With impact threatening global extinction, NASA’s last-ditch plan — the illegal nuclear satellite “Hercules” — proves underpowered, forcing a tense, high-stakes pact with the USSR. The film blends orbital threats, political brinkmanship and practical special effects to deliver its apocalyptic thrills. In this article we’ll check whether Meteor is currently available on Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video or Apple TV+ and explain where to stream it right now. Meteor wasn’t a major awards winner, but its scale and effects keep it a memorable entry in the disaster genre.
Synopsis
A fragment nearly eight kilometers wide, torn from the asteroid Orpheus by a passing comet, is barreling toward Earth — an impact that would bring devastation on a planetary scale and likely end human civilization. NASA's only immediate option is to deploy an unauthorized orbital nuclear platform called "Hercules," but the satellite lacks the necessary yield to divert the mass. Their last chance is an uneasy alliance with the Soviet Union, which has secretly placed a comparable illicit weapon in orbit. With the clock ticking and mutual suspicion running deep, the fate of the world hinges on whether two rival superpowers can overcome politics and cooperate before it's too late.
