Synopsis
Robert Merivel, a young, aspiring physician, wins a place at the court of King Charles II after saving the life of someone dear to the monarch. Surrounded by luxury and favor, he basks in the privileges reserved for the king’s favorites. Asked to marry the king’s mistress to distract the queen—and commanded above all not to fall in love—he accepts the role as a performative shield. Against orders, Merivel grows genuinely attached to his new wife; when the truth comes to light, the king strips him of his rank and riches, casting him back to the humble life he once knew.
