Synopsis
A prophet named Lehi, his wife Sariah and their four sons—Laman, Lemuel, Sam and Nephi—are forced to flee Jerusalem after Lehi’s warnings about the city’s destruction make him a target. The family wanders into the wilderness, and Lehi later sends Nephi and his brothers back to Jerusalem to recover sacred brass plates and to bring the family of Ishmael, whose children then intermarry with Lehi’s. With their enlarged household they press on through the desert; after Ishmael dies they reach the seashore, where Nephi faces renewed rebellion from his brothers, triumphs over their opposition and builds a vessel. They sail across the ocean to a promised land in the Americas. Following Lehi’s death, tensions erupt again between Nephi and his elder brothers, and Nephi ultimately departs once more into the wilderness.
