Synopsis

In Venice in 1596, Bassanio, intent on winning the hand of the wealthy heiress Portia, begs his affluent merchant friend Antonio for a substantial sum; because Antonio’s wealth is tied up in overseas ventures, the two turn to Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, to obtain the loan.
