The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru

Synopsis

Filmmaker Fang Li and his crew undertake a meticulous, year-long investigation, piecing together archives, eyewitness accounts and family histories across British, American, Japanese and Chinese communities to uncover the truth behind the World War II “death ship” Lisbon Maru. Resting 30 meters beneath the sea off East Polar Island in Zhoushan, China, the wreck becomes the focal point of their dive-led inquiries as they confront competing memories, suppressed evidence and the human cost of a tragedy still reverberating through descendants and nations.
