They Will Have to Kill Us First

Synopsis

In 2012, Islamist militants overran northern Mali and enforced an uncompromising interpretation of Sharia. On August 12th they banned music—silencing radio stations, burning instruments and subjecting musicians to torture or execution. Overnight, the country’s most venerated cultural voices were driven into hiding or exile. The film follows these artists’ fight to keep their music alive: from violent clashes between the army and insurgents, to life in overcrowded refugee camps across the border where money and hope are in short supply, to dangerous returns to cities shattered by war. Alongside these stories, it traces the journey of Songhoy Blues as they emerge from displacement to find international success.
