Zoey Deutch Jon Hamm Comedy Netflix Debut

Two professionals conversing in modern broadcast studio setting

A Kansas hairdresser chasing Jon Hamm across Los Angeles with a briefcase full of classified documents and a gang of Italian assassins on her heels, Sony Pictures Classics clearly wasn't playing it safe with this one. Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass had its theatrical moment this summer, and now it's heading to a much larger audience. Netflix US confirms the film streams starting Saturday, November 7th, 2026, exactly 120 days after its July 10th theatrical opening on 1,000 screens across the country.

What the film is actually about

The premise is deceptively simple. Gail (played by Zoey Deutch) is a hairdresser from Kansas with a standing agreement with her fiancé : each of them names one celebrity they'd be free to sleep with, no strings attached. When she finds out he quietly swapped his pick without telling her, she decides to do the same, and her choice happens to be Jon Hamm, playing himself. Her friend Otto bundles her onto a plane to Los Angeles, where the mission to track down Hamm turns into something far messier than she bargained for.

The classified briefcase and the pursuing Italian assassins aren't just absurdist decoration. Director David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models) and co-writer Ken Marino, his longtime creative partner, structured the whole road-trip arc as a deliberate nod to The Wizard of Oz, relocated to Hollywood. Gail picks up her own crew of misfits along the way, including John Slattery as himself, which means two Mad Men alumni are essentially playing fictionalized versions of their real-world personas in the same film.

The movie runs 94 minutes and carries an R rating. Here's the official trailer :

Rotten Tomatoes currently sits at 78%, with critics singling out Deutch's "peppy charisma" as the engine keeping the comedy moving. The theatrical run didn't translate that goodwill into box office numbers, the film closed at $1.44 million domestically according to Box Office Mojo, but the Netflix window should give it a second chance with a far wider pool of viewers.

The full cast and who plays who

Beyond the central trio, the film assembles a genuinely eclectic ensemble. Keep your eyes open for some notable cameo appearances from recognizable faces throughout.

  • Zoey Deutch (Set It Up) as Gail Daughtry
  • Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as himself
  • John Slattery (Mad Men) as himself
  • Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) as Ludovica
  • Ben Wang (Karate Kid : Legends) as Caleb
  • Miles Gutierrez-Riley (The Wilds) as Otto
  • Ken Marino (Party Down) as Vincent

Cameos from Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Henry Winkler and "Weird Al" Yankovic are also confirmed. That's a remarkably stacked list of guest appearances for a comedy that never cracked $2 million at the box office.

Why November 7th makes perfect sense on Netflix

The November 7th date isn't accidental. Netflix has held a first-window deal with Sony Pictures in the US since 2022, and the standard gap between a film's theatrical release and its arrival on the platform has been locked at 120 days throughout that arrangement. Count 120 days from July 10th and you land precisely on November 7th.

The pattern holds consistently for the bigger Sony Pictures Classics releases. Here's how recent titles have followed the same timeline :

Film Theatrical opening Netflix debut Gap
Eleanor the Great September 26, 2025 January 24, 2026 120 days
Nuremberg November 7, 2025 March 7, 2026 120 days
Gail Daughtry... July 10, 2026 November 7, 2026 120 days

Smaller Sony Pictures Classics titles, limited releases on fewer screens, have waited considerably longer before landing on the platform. Jodie Foster's A Private Life, I Swear and A Magnificent Life all arrived many months after their limited theatrical runs, well outside that 120-day window. A 1,000-screen opening like Gail Daughtry firmly places it in the priority tier.

Once it lands on Netflix, expect an 18-month streaming window before the title moves to Disney+ and Hulu. Worth noting for viewers outside the US : since this is a 2026 release, it falls under the current domestic deal rather than the broader global Pay-1 agreement that takes effect from 2027. That means viewers in the UK, Canada and Australia face a significantly longer wait before the film becomes available on their local streaming services. We'll be tracking those international dates as they get confirmed.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass premiered at Sundance on January 25th, 2026, where Sony Pictures Classics acquired worldwide rights, describing it as "the most hilarious comedy we have seen in ages." Whether Netflix subscribers agree with that assessment starts November 7th.
